SECOND MEETING ON CONSTRAINED DYNAMICS AND QUANTUM GRAVITY SANTA MARGHERITA LIGURE (ITALY), SEPTEMBER 17-21 1996 FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT The Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare and the Universities of Genova and Torino invite all interested researchers and students to participate in the second meeting on Constrained Systems and Quantum Gravity, which will take place in Santa Margherita Ligure (Italy) from Tuesday 17 to Saturday 21 September 1996. The purpose of the meeting (as for the first meeting, held in Dubna, 1995) is to bring together workers from Field Theory, General Relativity and related areas to discuss the present status and latest developments in the quantum treatment of gravitational systems. The scientific programme will consist of invited plenary talks and short communications. The main subjects to be covered will include - Quantisation of Constrained Systems: Canonical Quantisation; Path Integral Methods; Geometrical Methods. - Quantum Gravity and Quantum Cosmology: String Theory; Lower Dimensional Gravity; Exactly Solvable Models; Quantum Black Holes and Entropy; Early Universe. It is located in the Tigullian gulf and unites old navy traditions with the modern comforts of a seaside resort. It was a fishing village in the Phoenician era, and later became one of the most important ports for fishing and red coral. In this century it developed into a prominent tourist resort. This year (1996) is the centennial anniversary for the world wide radio broadcasts that Guglielmo Marconi transmitted from his ship Elettra outside Santa Margherita. The renowned resort of Portofino is only 5 km away. The tourist season lasts from the beginning of June to the end of September. At the time of the meeting the weather is usually warm (average day temperature 20 C) and the atmosphere relaxed. Swim-suits are recommended. Trekking is also possible in the Portofino Park Mountain. Santa Margherita is an excellent base for visiting the Italian Riviera. One free day with a tour to Portofino is being planned. We will be glad to give information about the most beautiful tourist spots nearby. TRANSPORTATION Genova's International airport (C. Colombo) has daily connections to Milan, Rome, Frankfurt, Geneva, London, Munich, Zurich. The nearest intercontinental airport is Milan, though there are also good train connections with Rome. Bus transport to and from Genova airport will be arranged. Santa Margherita is also easily reached by train, road (fast motorway), and sea (from Rapallo, 4 kms away). More detailed transport information will be given in the second bulletin. VISAS Those people needing visas are requested to tell us; an official invitation will be issued. ATTENDANCE AND REGISTRATION There will be a registration fee of approx. 300,000 italian lire (more or less 200 $ US) to be paid on arrival in Santa Margherita. The registration fee includes: Bus transport from Genova airport to Santa Margherita and back; - Coffee breaks; - Banquet and Concert; - Tour to Portofino. Tickets for accompanying persons attending the social events (banquet, concert and excursion) may be purchased. The organising committee expects to be able to arrange cheap accommodation for those participants who require it. FINANCIAL SUPPORT Subject to funding, there may be some limited aid for younger participants who otherwise could not attend. At the moment we do not know how much will be available, so our suggestion is to send the request anyway. PROCEEDINGS It has not yet been decided whether or not to publish proceedings. APPLICATION Those who wish to participate are kindly requested to complete the enclosed registration and accommodation form and return it to the address below as soon as possible and before June 30, 1996. We welcome applications by e-mail. Messages sent by e-mail, if not confirmed in a few days, should be sent again. In any case, please send all correspondence, by mail, fax or e-mail, to the address below. Due to time restrictions there will be a limited number of speakers in the parallel sessions, therefore those who would like to speak are requested to submit the tentative title of their talk and a short abstract as soon as possible. The organising committee reserves the right to accept or not, subject to approval by the Advisory Committee and to the time available.
